NYARIBO'S FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL: CAN CHANUA UNSEAT NYAMIRA'S GOVERNOR IN 2027?

As 2027 nears, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo faces impeachment battles, clan dynamics and the rising influence of Fred Matiang'i, with youthful challenger Walter Chanua emerging as his most serious threat.

NYARIBO'S FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL: CAN CHANUA UNSEAT NYAMIRA'S GOVERNOR IN 2027?

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo is fighting for political survival. After completing the late John Nyagarama’s term and winning the seat in his own right in 2022, he now faces a crowded and increasingly hostile field as the 2027 election approaches. While he continues to point to health upgrades, ECDE digital learning, road improvements under Barabara Mashinani, and partnerships with organisations such as the Safaricom Foundation, the political ground beneath him is shifting. Multiple impeachment attempts, growing demands for faster and more visible development, and a regional realignment around Fred Matiang’i have left the incumbent vulnerable.

Local political observers have long predicted that the contest could settle into a two-horse race between Nyaribo and one energetic challenger: Walter Onkundi Chanua. Chanua, a youthful politician with deep pockets and growing grassroots momentum, has positioned himself as the candidate of change and equitable development. He has secured endorsements from groups such as the Abanyakoni clan in North Mugirango, support from women’s caucuses and youth outfits like the Green Army, and has been actively campaigning on the message that parts of the county  particularly Kitutu Masaba have been sidelined under the current administration. His pledge of public participation-driven projects and a break from clan-skewed development resonates with voters tired of incremental progress.

Why Nyaribo Is on the Defensive

Nyaribo’s vulnerabilities are structural and political. He has survived three impeachment motions in the County Assembly, emerging bruised but still in office. While allies dismiss these as succession battles dressed up as accountability, the repeated attempts have projected an image of a governor under constant siege. Critics, including Senator Okongo Omogeni, have described the county as dysfunctional in key areas. Even where development has occurred  dialysis machines at the referral hospital, increased ECDE enrolment through feeding programmes, and medical commodity flag-offs  many residents argue the pace and equity of delivery fall short of expectations in a county of tea, dairy and banana farmers who demand tangible returns from devolution.

Clan dynamics further complicate his path. Nyaribo hails from the Abagirango/Bogirango side. A crowded field of challengers from Bogetutu and other blocs risks splitting the anti-incumbent vote, but it also means Nyaribo cannot take any single bloc for granted. Reports of strained relations with Deputy Governor James Gesami add another layer of uncertainty about regional balance on his ticket.

Overhanging everything is the rise of Fred Matiang’i as the undisputed kingpin of Gusii politics. As Jubilee’s presidential flag-bearer, Matiang’i commands significant influence across Nyamira and Kisii. Candidates aligned with him, or at least not openly opposed to the emerging opposition current, stand to benefit. Nyaribo’s political positioning relative to this new power centre remains ambiguous, leaving him exposed if the regional vote consolidates against the status quo.

Why Chanua Is Best Placed to Capitalise

Among the declared and active aspirants including Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi, former candidate Walter Nyambati, Engineer James Kemoni, Duke Ombagi (who carries strong Matiang’i and elder endorsements), Ben Momanyi, Timothy Bosire and others  Chanua currently projects the clearest combination of youth appeal, resource capacity and targeted messaging against the incumbent. Local analysis has repeatedly framed the race as potentially boiling down to Nyaribo versus Chanua. His campaign emphasises listening to residents rather than imposing projects, addressing historical marginalisation of certain constituencies, and delivering more balanced development. In a county where younger voters and those frustrated by the pace of change form a significant bloc, this message has traction.

Duke Ombagi remains a serious contender, particularly if Matiang’i’s endorsement becomes decisive and Jubilee consolidates. Jerusha Momanyi brings the advantage of a successful Women Representative tenure and gender appeal. Yet Chanua’s early organisational activity, clan endorsements in key areas, and consistent framing as the change candidate give him the edge in many local assessments of who is best positioned to unseat the governor.

Nyaribo is not finished. Incumbency, a record of relative stability compared with neighbouring Kisii, and the ability to mobilise resources still give him a fighting chance. He continues to flag projects and warn that he is “not sleeping.” But the combination of repeated impeachment battles, rising expectations for faster delivery, a fragmented but energetic opposition, and the powerful undercurrent of Matiang’i’s regional influence has tilted the terrain against him.

If Nyamira voters decide they want a reset in 2027, Walter Chanua currently stands as the candidate most likely to benefit. He has the youth energy, the early endorsements, the resources, and the clearest contrast narrative against the incumbent. Whether that translates into victory will depend on whether the anti-Nyaribo vote consolidates or fragments  and on how forcefully the broader Gusii realignment plays out at the county level.

For now, the message from the ground is clear: the seat is no longer safe, and the strongest alternative is already making his case.
